The moment it was revealed that Captain Marvel would take place in the 90s many had quite a few questions. One of the most prominent was if we could expect characters from past films to make an appearance in the film. It was confirmed that Nick Fury would have a considerable role so many hoped that this would also confirm the appearance of Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, who has not been seen in a film since the first Avengers. He has been acting director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but the potential of him returning in a film has its own charms, especially if it could help expand the characters past even more. Then Marvel Studios goes and surprises us with even more returning characters such as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Ronan and Korath. Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige gave some backstory on what decision help bring back these characters.
“It was the backstory of those characters crossing over into Kree mythology, and Kree lore, that just made it made it work. And I always think it’s fun to see, most obviously with Fury in Captain Marvel, but also to a certain extent you’ll see with Ronan and Korath, characters the way they were before they became the icons that you have seen in other films. And it’s just fun to see people in different environments.”
